The International School of Tanganyika (IST) is an international school in Dar es Salaam. Tanzania. which opened in 1963. As of 2005 it had two campuses with over 100 teaching staff serving 960 students from more than 60 countries.

The International School of Tanganyika is an International Baccalaureate World School which hosts the Primary Years, Middle Years. and Diploma Programmes.

Scholars from IST have gone to universities such as MIT, Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge, Yale, Brown, LSE, UCL, Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, Stanford and SCAD.

As well as their academic studies all students from grades 6 up engage in the Community service aspect of the IB CAS programme. In 2003, the community service activity "Eyesight for All" was selected by the IBO (International Baccalaureate Organization) as being the best community service activity in the world.

In sports, IST performs in the regional ISSEA (International School's of Southern and Eastern Africa) tournaments in which International Schools from Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and South Africa compete in Basketball, Volleyball, Cricket, Rugby and Football.

IST is open to anyone and everyone from all over the world. If needing to go to early childhood the child's age must span from the ages of 3-6. Then if needing to go to the primary school, the child's age must range in the ages of 6-11. Finally, if needing to go to the high school, the child must be from the ages of 11-18 (this includes the IB years program as well.)

In this school, they teach many subjects. In the early childhood and primary years, they teach Physical Education, Art, Kiswahilli (the language spoken in Tanzania) French and Spanish (As you go into higher grades you get to choose from the two of which you wish to learn), Math, English, Humanities, Music and Information Technology. As you go into the Secondary levels you learn Math, English, Science, Chemistry, Physics, Humanities, a language of your choice (either Spanish, French or Kiswahilli), Health and Social Education, Physical Education and many more.

Many children enjoy this school and make friends from all over the world. In this school, countries all over the world are very important, people come from places such as Sweden, America, Canada, England, Japan, China, Korea, Kenya, Ethiopia, Egypt, Ecuador, Mexico, Australia, Croatia, South Africa and many more. What People Say IB Diploma Scholarship

Each year, IST awards five merit- and need-based scholarships to Tanzanian students who would like to pursue the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme.

Successful candidates are awarded a two-year, full-tuition scholarship covering IB I and II (Grades 11 and 12). This programme is designed for students who have been successful in following the Tanzanian national curriculum through Form IV and who would like to pursue the IB Diploma.

Applications are accepted from January through mid-February of each year for admission to the following academic year which begins in August. To apply for the scholarship programme, look for announcements in the newpapers and visit this website in January of each year to download the application forms and to learn more.

A limited number of scholarships will be available for Tanzanian citizens where there is a genuine and proven financial need as well as outstanding academic performance and potential. The deadline for IB scholarship applications is Friday, February 24, 2017. Testing for selected applicants will take place at the Secondary School Campus, Masaki in early March.

The International School of Tanganyika, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, is a private, non-profit, co-educational day school offering 14 years of English Language medium schooling for students aged four to 19 years. It is governed by a Board of Directors, elected for three-year terms of office by the parents.

The curriculum is designed to meet the needs of students from the international community of Dar es Salaam, for the majority of whom English is a foreign language. The programme of studies maintains academic standards comparable to those in other large international schools and in the national schools of Europe and North America.

There are 100 fully qualified teachers from 20 countries; more than half have been recruited from the UK and another 20 from the USA. IST is assisted by the Office of Overseas Schools of the US Department of State and is accredited by CIS and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. IST enrols 870 students, representing 62 nationalities. IST is a fully accredited IBO school offering the Primary Years Programme at Elementary level and the Middle Years Programme at Secondary level. The final two years at IST include the International Baccalaureate programme, a rigorously academic pre-university course of study. Ninety-five per cent of graduates go on to higher education.

The school year begins in late August and consists of four terms. There is an extensive optional afternoon activities programme offering sports, art and crafts, music, computers, field trips and community service.

IST is located on three campuses (ECC, Elementary and Secondary). Facilities include 80 classrooms, two auditoriums, two infirmaries, two gymnasia, two playing fields, three swimming pools, seven science labs, two computer labs, two libraries, an AV theatre, a purpose-built studio theatre, an administration block and a music and drama complex.
