Teaching assistant career development

Teaching assistant career development

When you first take on the role of teaching assistant, you will probably be offered the opportunity to complete an induction course which will help you to understand your role and give you plenty of ideas about how to fulfil it effectively. Many local authorities will also offer you the opportunity for training and development on an on-going basis. These courses are often not accredited but are likely to add to your ability to fulfil your role effectively.

QCF awards

There are also a wide range of qualifications available to teaching assistants to help you develop your role under the qualifications and credit framework (QCF). Most of the awards are vocational work-related qualifications which you study for whilst working as a teaching assistant. Each award has an associated number of points assigned to it – by completing multiple awards you can gain a diploma or NVQ which can help you to progress in your role and earn a pay rise.

The following awards are currently available

  • Level 2 Award in support work in schools
  • Level 2 Certificate in supporting teaching and learning in schools
  • Level 2 Certificate in supporting the wider curriculum in schools
  • Level 3 Award in supporting teaching and learning in schools
  • Level 3 Certificate in supporting teaching and learning in schools
  • Level 3 Certificate in cover supervision of pupils in schools
  • Level 3 Diploma in specialist support for teaching and learning in schools

You can find out more information about the awards, including details of awarding bodies on the TDA Website .

Commercially available TA courses

There are also a wide range of commercially available courses to help you develop your role as a teaching assistant. In most instances these are not accredited but can be very helpful in enabling you to develop your skills, confidence or understanding in particular areas. Your school’s CPD or training co-ordinator should have information about the courses available in your local area.

Teaching assistant grades

There are four grades of teaching assistant:

  • Level one teaching assistants (TA1)
  • Level two teaching assistants (TA2)
  • Level three teaching assistants (TA3)
  • Higher level teaching assistants (TA4)

Teaching assistants working at higher levels take on more responsibility and consequently receive higher pay. To progress beyond level one you will need an NVQ or equivalent. In most instances, your school will support you in gaining the relevant experience and qualifications you need to progress and consequently it is quite possible to work your way up through the different teaching assistant grades whilst you are in post.

Within each level, you may also receive an enhanced salary if your work is mainly with pupils with special needs, again this is something you may be offered specific training on. Whilst challenging, this can be a very rewarding area to work in.

Exactly what is required of teaching assistants at each level varies between schools and local authorities, but as you work up the pay scale from a level one teaching assistant (TA1) to a level three teaching assistant (TA3) you will take on an increasing amount of responsibility and autonomy. You are likely to start at level one if you have not worked as a teaching assistant previously. At this level you can expect to work under the supervision of a more senior member of staff – usually the classroom teacher. As you become more advanced you may be asked to do additional tasks such as support groups of pupils on your own, or plan and prepare learning activities.

Higher Level Teaching Assistants

The most advanced role a teaching assistant can fulfil is that of a Higher Level Teaching Assistant. At this level you might:

  • Have a role in planning some lessons
  • Be involved in developing support materials
  • Specialise in a particular subject
  • Lead a whole class under supervision
  • Be responsible for supporting other support staff

To become an HLTA, you need to meet the national HLTA standards. When you’re ready, your school can support you in making the transition from teaching assistant to HLTA.
